Palisade High School Students Qualify for National Speech/Debate Tournament; Travel Fundraiser Started

Three Palisade High School Students have qualified to compete at the National Speech & Debate Tournament, to be held in Des Moine, Iowa on June 16 – 21, 2024. The debate team has initiated a fundraiser to help with travel costs.

Kennedy Stephen qualified in Congressional Debate, while Annika Walla and Lynessa Asplund qualified in World Schools Debate.

Congressional Debate is a mock legislative assembly competition where students draft bills (proposed laws) and resolutions (position statements), which they and their peers later debate and vote to pass into law and then take action on by voting for or against the legislation.

World Schools Debate is a unique and dynamic form of debate, unlike any other practiced in the United States. It combines “prepared” topics with “impromptu” topics, encouraging debaters to focus on specific issues rather than debate theory or procedural arguments. This highly interactive style of debate allows debaters to engage each other, even during speeches. This challenging format requires good teamwork and in-depth quality argumentation.

There will also be one additional tournament in April where up to six more Palisade students might qualify for Nationals, and if they do, the travel costs will be even greater.

In addition to the Pie Sales Fundraiser, donations can be made directly to Palisade Speech & Debate via check or cash and delivered directly to Palisade High School, or contact Coach Tracy Seremak, who will be happy to pick up your donation.

As an additional incentive for donations, The Palisade Post will MATCH any donations to Palisade Speech and Debate between now and April 5 (up to $500 total), so your donation goes twice as far.
